My very first post on my new blog! I am a newbie vegetarian (first day meat free 10/6/09)! It’s amazing what a bit of reading and watching some movies will do. More on that below. Due to this new way of life I am in the midst of learning how to cook – everything vegetarian and even venturing into veganism. I won’t call myself a vegan because I know there will be times that I have dairy products but my goal is to keep them few and far between. The purpose of this blog is to document my successes and failures with various dishes.
Oh and absolutely nothing processed .. that includes bread (make it from scratch), tomato sauce, peanut butter, tortillas, broth (I’ve seen HFCS in veggie broth!). My one weakness is ketchup – I will try to make it from scratch but haven’t gotten to it yet so I buy organic and make sure there isn’t any HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).
Right now I am trying to adhere to the McDougall Program. It is a vegan-ish, low fat plan. No animal products are allowed except honey. The low-fat part is HARD. I’m only on day 4 so we’ll see how it goes. It’s an experiment with one caveat .. I refuse to give up my wine. No way. No how. Ever.
Here are the books and movies that lead me to this lifestyle …
Books:
1. In Defence of Food : The Myth of Nutrition and the Pleasures of Eating by Michael Pollan
2. The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World by John Robbins Excellent!! Cannot recommend it enough!
3. Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World’s Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples by John Robbins
4. The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health by T. Colin Campbell
5. Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body’s Natural Ability to Heal Itself by Alejandro Junger
These are just a few that I have enjoyed.
Movies:
1. Food, Inc
2. King Corn
3. Meet Your Meat (this video is what got my 11 year old daughter to go veggie as well!)
That’s it for now. Will post my first recipe later today.
